The 9th RED-POP Meeting

The 9th Red-POP Meeting was hosted by the Museum of Life and took place three days before the 4SCWC, from April 8 through April 10, 2005.

Red-POP is an interactive network that congregates centres and programs for the popularization of science and technology in Latin American and the Caribbean, operating by means of regional cooperation mechanisms, which foster the exchange, training and use of resources among its members. This network was established in 1990, in Rio de Janeiro, inspired by the UNESCO’s Science, Technology and Society Program, and its meetings occurs every two years.

Although they were separated events, the 9th Red-POP Meeting was linked to the 4SCWC by its central theme area: “Scientific Culture and Social Inclusion”. The goal was to promote reflection as well as the exchange of results, ideas and experiences concerning science and technology diffusion and popularization, emphasizing social inclusion and interaction with the scientific and technological nature of modern society.

The work proposals were linked to research, experiences or proposals concerning the following subjects:

. Non-formal education in science and technology

. Science museums and interactive science centers

. Material production (popularization of science and technology audiovisuals, multimedia, videos, educational games, etc.)

. Scientific journalism (experiences and projects in the communication of science in mass media)

. Professionalization of science communication
