Section: Science Communicators

International Union for Science Communicators

During the 4SCWC, there was an associated event for science communicators - the 3rd International Conference for Science Communicators -, which featured special seminars.

The first two International Conferences, established by the National Centre for Science Communicators  - NCSC -, took place respectively in 2000 and 2003, in Pune and Mumbai.

The theme of the 3rd International Conference for Science Communicators was SCIENCE COMMUNICATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES and the seminars approached the following subjects:

Seminar 1 (April 11th, 16h - 19h): Science Communication-Country Experience

There are several issues that we have to deal with in our daily life. For example, water, electricity, health, roads, housing, agriculture, environment and so on. There are a great number of individuals and institutions working with these issues either as job or hobby. The speakers in this seminar will choose one of the subjects mentioned and explain its condition in his/her own country. For example, water: "is there sufficient water in lakes, dams, rivers etc?"; "is the water safe to drink?"; "what efforts are being made to reduce the water shortage?"; "is there any appeal for people to use water wisely?"

Chairperson: Dr. Narender Sehgal (India)

Speakers: Dr. Parul Sheth (India),  Ms Beena Thambi (Oman, Middle East); Dr. Ildeu De Castro Moreira (Brazil)

Seminar 2 (April 12th, 16h - 19h): Scientific Temper and Cultural Systems

Traditionally, every society has its own faiths. Some of them are what we may call "blind faiths" (or superstitions). There are some harmless blind faiths, such as believing that the number 13 is inauspicious. However, there are some quite harmful blind faiths, such as killing birds or goats to please the gods and so on. For these, science communicators have to inform and persuade people with those beliefs about the consequences of their actions. Speakers will discuss this issueand inform people about the efforts  - either at individual or institutional level - that can be done to meet this problem.

Coordinator: Prof.Yash Pal (India)

Speakers: Prof. Mariam Addy (Ghana), Dr.J.V. Narlikar (India), Dr. Henrique Lins e Barros (Brazil)

Seminar 3 (April 13th, 16h - 19h): National and International Networking in Science Communication

There are many institutions working in the field of physics, chemistry, astronomy, water and health which are contributing to public education. How is it possible to network all these efforts in order to improve science communication?

Chairperson: Prof. Ennio Candotti (Brazil)

Speakers: Mr.A.P. Deshpande (India), Prof. Eijiro Hiei (Japan), Dr.A.P. Jayaraman (Singapore)

Seminar 4 (April 14th, 16h - 19h): Role of Scientific Communicators in Enhancing Science Education

Science education at the school level is hardly 50 years old. Is it useful to cope up with life? Are teachers good communicators? How can we improve teacher`s communication skills? Are there any courses in Science Communication or Science Journalism? How can voluntary organisations support school teachers?

Chairperson: Dr.P.M. Bhargava (India)

Speakers: Mr. Laxman Londhe (India), Mr. Suhas, Naik-Satam (India), Prof. Ernest Hamburguer (Brazil), Dr. Manasi Rajadhyaksha (India)
