"Science Centres: Breaking Barriers, Engaging Citizens"

We live in a world of contrasts. The tremendous advancement of science and technology and the shaping of an international community based on a global economy and communication have in many ways strengthened barriers that limit the quality of life in both developed and developing countries. Boundaries separating science from the public understanding of its meanings and developments, and isolating underserved communities and disabled people from education. Barriers between cultures, religions, rich and poor, science and art.

How do we overcome such barriers? The third Science Centre World Congress recognised that one of the main challenges for the sustainability of science centres and museums is to reinforce the relevance and legitimacy of their action among local communities, while maintaining scientific integrity and high-quality standards. During the 4SCWC, we debated these issues with a special emphasis on our contribution to equity and social inclusion, and discuss how we can help ensure that our population has access to health, education, leisure, culture, a healthy environment, and a life without fear and violence. In short, we pursued ways to help people fully exercise their rights as citizens and benefit from the achievements of science.
